Former Bradford care home sells for £900,000 at auction

A FORMER care home has sold for almost £900,000 at an auction that saw nine Council owned properties sell for a total of over £2.5 million.

Valley View, a former children’s care home off Lister Lane, was closed by Bradford Council in 2022 as part of a shake up of its care home systems.

At the time the authority said the building “does not provide a physical environment that is consistent with the care of children.”

It has since been included on a list of over 150 assets that the Council plans to sell to help fill its huge financial black hole.

The property had initially been listed for auction earlier this year with a £750,000 guide price.

But it failed to sell and was relisted for an online auction held this week.

This time the guide price was lowered to £690,000.

But the site ended up selling for £898,000 – one of several Council owned properties to sell for far above their guide price.

One lot – a plot of land off Woodside Road in Wyke, which the listing described as being blighted with Japanese Knotweed, had a guide price of just £5,000 but ended up selling for £85,000.

At part of its request for “exceptional financial support” Bradford Council was given permission to use money from the sale of assets to fund day to day council services.

Councils can normally only use money from such sales for capital projects, such as new developments.

Other Council owned lots that sold at the auction this week include:

Flappit Springs, a 0.7 acre plot of land opposite the Flappit Pub on Halifax Road, outside of Keighley. It had a guide price of £5,000 but sold for £71,000.

A petrol filling station on Hammerton Street, on the outskirts of the city centre, had a guide price of £25-30,000 and sold for £93,000.

Cliffe Lane West, a 1.85 acre site in Baildon, had a guide price of £150,000 and sold for £160,000.

1-3 Browgate and 2-3 Westgate in Baildon, a Council owned row of buildings home to a number of businesses who rent space from the authority, had a guide price of £395,000 and sold for £435,000.

A parade of shops in Bingley, 7-9, 11, 13 and 13a Chapel Lane, that are leased to several businesses had a guide price of £350,000 and sold for £143,000.

36 Belgrave Road, a four-bedroom mid-terraced property in Bingley, had a guide price of £130,000 and sold for £143,000.

And a commercial building on Thornton Road, leased to Johnstone’s Paint on a lease that runs out in 2080, had a guide price of £170,000. It sold for £248,000.

Details of the buyers were not disclosed.
