Sebastiaan Bornauw believes the close-knit friendship within Leeds’ squad has been their biggest strength in the Premier League this season.

Daniel Farke’s side celebrated their top-flight survival by snatching a 1-0 win against Brighton in front of their own fans at Elland Road on Sunday thanks to Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s goal in the sixth minute of stoppage time.

Leeds produced a dogged defensive display, soaking up plenty of second-half pressure before Calvert-Lewin’s last-gasp winner left Brighton’s European hopes resting on next week’s final game of the season.

Bornauw said: “We knew they were really good on the ball, so we had to defend really well and be really compact, because otherwise they find the passes between the lines.

“And then I think we countered well, we were dangerous on set pieces as well. In the end, we scored a goal and I think that shows our mentality as a group. That’s what I like.

“I think that’s probably the biggest strength of our group, never giving up, running for each other. A group of friends going to the end, and I think that’s our biggest strength.”

Leeds climbed up to 14th place by extending their unbeaten league run to eight matches and Bornauw said they will be bidding to finish the season higher in their final game next Sunday at a West Ham side who could have already been relegated.

“That’s also a strength,” the Belgian defender added. “I think as a group we’re always trying to do our best and trying to win. We want to win every game and next week we’ll give our best and try to win that as well.”
