A man from Batley has been jailed for six years after assaulting a woman and a man who attempted to step in to protect the first victim.

Ibrar Mehrban, 37, was sentenced at Leeds Crown Court earlier being found guilty of grievous bodily harm and section 47 assault.

The attacks occurred in Batley just before 1.30am on July 1 last year.

Members of the public alerted police after overhearing an assault on a woman.

Officers arrived at the scene to find a woman in her 30s who had suffered head and facial injuries.

A man in his 20s, who had come to her aid, was also found with serious head injuries. Both victims required hospital treatment.

Police investigations revealed that Mehrban initially assaulted the woman in the street and continued attacking her inside a garage, which was then overheard by the man.

He went to investigate and opened the garage door, which is when Mehrban attacked him with a brick, knocking him to the floor .

Mehrban was arrested by officers at the scene and charged later that day.

Detective Constable Mandy Geary, of West Yorkshire Police, said:

“We want to pay tribute to the courage of both victims in this case."

"The man in particular showed genuine bravery in putting himself in harm’s way to intervene in what he realised was an ongoing assault inside that garage. His actions stopped the victim from suffering greater harm.

“We hope seeing the sentencing of this violent man will now bring them some comfort and closure.”
