Batley man admits murdering woman before going on knife-wielding rampage
Michael Doherty, also known as Michael Moore, killed Courtney Angus at his home in Batley - before threatening staff at a local supermarket
A man has admitted to the murder of a woman at his home in Batley, before embarking on a knife wielding rampage which saw him threaten staff at local shops.
38 year old Michael Doherty, also known as Michael Moore, has pleaded guilty to murdering 21-year-old Courtney Angus on Norfolk Street on July 25 last year, before heading into Dewsbury town centre.
He threatened supermarket staff and stole from local shops before being detained by police.
Doherty shouted abuse at officers during his arrest and then confessed to having killed someone.
In a tribute issued last year, Courtney's family called her a "beautiful soul"
"She was a lover of music, socialising and having fun. Her whole family is heartbroken over the loss of such an amazing woman" they wrote.
Alongside murder Doherty admitted theft, and three counts of threatening a person with a knife, including two aimed at police officers.
He'll be sentenced at a later date.
Graham Measures, District Crown Prosecutor for the CPS Yorkshire & Humberside, said:
"Michael Doherty is a dangerous and violent man who subjected Courtney Angus to a horrific death. She was just 21 years old with her whole life ahead of her.
"Our lawyers worked closely with West Yorkshire Police to build a thorough prosecution and present the full extent of Doherty's offending – ultimately resulting in the guilty pleas we have achieved today.
"Nothing can undo the devastation Doherty has caused, but we hope this outcome brings some sense of justice for Courtney's family and friends."
