Yorkshire Water have clarified that works to repair a length of sewer pipe will see a main cross-Pennine route closed again for ten days in total.

The A646 Halifax Road at Charlestown, Hebden Bridge, partially re-opened under two-way lights following previous repair work to a length of damaged sewer and to a Calderdale Council-owned culvert on January 23 after being closed since December 13.

This time the company needs to undertake work on a different section of damaged sewer 65 metres further up the road towards Todmorden and have confirmed that the road will essentially remain closed from 8pm on Friday, February 14, until 6am on February 24.

For the first three days teams will be working 24 hours a day on the repair, and after that work will continue on a between 8am and 5pm basis – ten days in total.

The work is being undertaken during schools’ half term holiday.

Yorkshire Water says the work will be to repair a section of sewer and improve the resilience of the wider section of sewer that runs under the road by reinforcing it with a structural liner.

The lining work will be undertaken on the normal working hours days.

The road needs to be closed to enable the work to be done safely, the company says.

James Harrison, head of customer field services at Yorkshire Water, said: “We absolutely understand the impact this closure will have following the closure of the same road in recent months but we want to make sure our sewer is as resilient as possible to reduce the likelihood of this happening again in future.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused and we will be working as hard as possible to complete the work and remove the road closure as soon as possible.”

Calderdale Council will be putting diversion signage in place in the affected towns, and a senior councillor has said she wants this to include notices that businesses are open.
