A man has been jailed for assaulting his partner and killing her dog.

Derek Campbell, of no fixed address, admitted causing unnecessary suffering to an animal and assault at an earlier hearing in July.

It follows an incident on 2 February 2025 when the 46-year-old had been staying at a friend’s house in Norwich with his partner.

The two argued and during the row Campbell smashed a full bottle of wine over his partner’s head and punched her in the face a number of times.

He went on to grab her beloved pet Chihuahua Snowy from her arms and throw him against the back door killing the animal.

On Tuesday 2 September 2025 he was sentenced at Norwich Crown Court to two years and eight months in prison.

He was also handed a ten-year ban on keeping animals.

Det Con Amiee Bickel said: “This was a despicable act of domestic violence towards the victim and cruelty towards a defenceless animal and much-loved pet.

“Campbell’s actions have had a devastating impact on the victim who loved Snowy and regarded him as her world.

“Targeting her through her dog is a truly horrible and spiteful act, and I hope the victim will find some justice in this sentence for both her and Snowy.”
