Norfolk and Waveney Mind looks to the future on its 60th anniversary
Local charity aims to tackle stigma around mental health
Norfolk and Waveney Mind is marking its 60th anniversary this year with a series of fundraising events intended to address the stigma surrounding mental health.
The charity is organising various activities under the '60 for 60' campaign. Teams are engaging in different events, including walking Werryman's Way, a 60-kilometre trek, and hosting a quiz on the 14th of August.
Sonja Chilvers, Chief Executive Officer of Norfolk and Waveney Mind, emphasised the importance of local fundraising:
"Whatever we raise fundraising stays local to our community. So when you fundraise locally, it goes back into local provision."
Although Norfolk and Waveney Mind is affiliated with National Mind, it does not receive financial support from the national organisation.
Funds raised by the local community are directed towards services within the Norfolk and Waveney area, ensuring that contributions benefit local mental health initiatives.
The charity is also focusing on breaking down barriers, particularly for the male population, who often face challenges in accessing mental health support due to stigma.
"We know that the stigma and shame is still within our male population. It's harder for a male
to reach out for various reasons," Sonja said.
With funds raised, Norfolk and Waveney Mind has appointed a male community connector to work with businesses like barbers and gyms across the county.
Over the next 60 years, Norfolk and Waveney Mind envisions a future where there is 'zero to suicide' and reduced stigma surrounding mental health:
"I would like to see zero to suicide. I think, that's one of the biggest, saddest areas within mental health where someone feels they've got any other way out,"
"Over the next 60 years, I drastically want to see that change" Sonja said.
The charity aims to enhance the understanding and acceptance of mental health issues.
