Norfolk joins global Wave of Light in honour of Baby Loss Awareness
Families unite to remember babies lost too soon through candle-lighting ceremony
People across Norfolk will be participating in a Wave of Light this evening in honour of Baby Loss Awareness Week.
The week wraps up with the global "Wave of Light" on 15th October, inviting families worldwide to light candles at 7pm.
Participants can take photos of their candles and share them on social media using #WaveOfLight to connect with others in remembrance.
Natasha Garforth, from Norfolk, has personally navigated the experience of baby loss and now volunteers at Angels and Rainbows Baby Loss Support Group to help others through their grief.
She explains that this evening is a time for families to come together, reflect, and remember babies who have passed away.
"Its very important because it gives bereaved parents a chance to talk about their babies, say their name, right their name and think about them" she said.
Natasha explained that through social media, it connects other families also taking part, without being in the same room:
"because of social media, you might choose to take a picture of your candle and then to share it on your social media and then you see all these other candles popping up.
you just feel seen and I think it helps other people to feel seen as well and to know that they're not alone."
She hopes the event helps other families feel less alone, and breaks down taboos around infant loss.
"it's something that about 30, 40, even 20 years ago, people didn't really talk about. I think even when i went through my loss eight years ago, until it actually happened to me, I didn't know baby loss awareness was a thing. "
Baby Loss Awareness Week aims to elevate understanding about infant loss, fostering dialogue and support both locally and worldwide.
