A Norfolk decision-maker is taking on a 'Gold' driving course to raise awareness about ageing can affect driving.

It's part of a new campaign from the County's Road Safety Partnership- called ‘Drive Safe’- which aims to give older drivers more support, when hitting the road.

It includes a series of videos produced by Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service, a digital toolkit with practical tips, new driver workshops and additional places on Norfolk County Council's GOLD course.

What is a 'GOLD' course?

Standing for 'Guidance for Older Drivers', it's a one-hour on-road driving session is designed to refresh driving skills, build confidence, and support older drivers in staying safe on the road for longer.

It's conducted by an approved driving instructor (ADI) who tailors the session to the driver's needs.

Why is this campaign being launched?

25% of Norfolk’s population are over 65 years old.

81% of people who responded to Norfolk County Council’s Older Driver Survey in 2024 reported not knowing where to get support to drive safely for longer.

Since 2022 police recorded collisions indicate an increase in causalities aged 60 plus years meaning that this is now greater than the England average.

"I think I'm a good driver, and I think we all are really"

Councillor Fran Whymark is Cabinet Member for Public Health at Norfolk County Council:

"We want people to drive for longer and to be safe. We also want to build confidence, as that can be lost over time. Through these course we can have somebody help improve your skills.

"I think I'm a good driver, and I think we all are really. But when you're put on the spot and you're being observed, they can pick up on things that you're missing.

"57% of over 60s haven't read the Highway Code since it was changed in 2022, or can't remember when they'd done it.

"I haven't look at the code since I remember when. It was way before 2022 and I'd say I'm the average driver".
