A project in Norfolk is set to deliver weeks of engaging activities and nutritious meals for children and young people this summer under the Big Norfolk Holiday Fun programme.

Bookings are now open for the programme, which is available from 20th July to 2nd September for children aged four to 16 who are eligible for benefits-related free school meals.

Families who do not qualify for free places can access activities at a small cost.

Managed by Active Norfolk on behalf of Norfolk County Council, the programme is part of the Government-funded Holiday Activity and Food initiative now in its fifth year.

Since its launch in July 2021, the scheme has successfully provided free activities and meals to thousands of children in Norfolk.

Overall, there have been more than 184,000 attendances, with a significant portion of participants having special educational needs and disabilities.

Sara Tough OBE, Executive Director of Children’s Services at Norfolk County Council, highlighted the benefit of the programme, saying,

"We know that the school holidays can be a difficult time for families that usually receive a free school meal and this programme has been a lifeline for many, giving children food and positive activities."

Organisers say that the range of activities on offer has significantly grown over the last five years with "water sports, gymnastics, science, hair and beauty workshops, skateboarding" and more.

Parents have shared their positive experiences, noting the social and developmental benefits the programme has brought to their children.

One parent said, "Big Norfolk Holiday Fun have given us a precious gift… my child has made new friends, improved confidence and self-esteem, learnt new skills… I’d never get a break without it."

Another shared, "As a single mum these sessions meant I could still work in the holidays rather than taking unpaid leave, the service was so helpful, "

"It has been amazing for her – she loved going, meeting new people, and having structure through the holidays."
