Safety tips as lifeguards finish for the season at Norfolk beaches
Norfolk beaches without lifeguard patrols from Monday
Its the final weekend of the year when lifeguards will be patrolling Norfolk beaches, so individuals planning to visit the coast after Sunday are being urged to take extra care.
The RNLI has reported a busy summer season marked by extended periods of good weather which kept their teams busy around the clock since May.
Now, as their presence along the coast winds down, they are urging visitors to remember some key points before heading to the beach.
Liam Fayle-Parr from the RNLI Water Safety Team said: “Sunday marks the end of lifeguard patrols on Norfolk beaches for the year. If anyone’s heading to the beach after this weekend, it’s crucial to ensure your safety by checking the conditions and tides yourself.”
Liam advised that If conditions seem concerning, follow your instincts:
“If in doubt, don’t go in. Stay within your depth and swim parallel to the shore. Avoid going near the edge and watch out for underwater hazards.”
He also shared advice that utilising equipment like toe floats, life jackets and bright colours can enhance visibility and offer buoyancy, which can be pivotal if misfortune strikes.
The RNLI are also urging everyone to remember their key message - float to live.
"Remember to float to live. If you face danger, lie back with your ears submerged, stay composed, calm your breathing and call for help" Liam said.
Even beach goers who don't intend to swim, are advised to follow some key safety instructions:
"if you're planning on going walking, it's very important to check the tides and to ensure that you are back on dry sand or dry land at least four hours before high tide.
Beaches like Wells has lots of signage and walking maps available,
So make sure you look out for those and make sure you're sort of clued up before going on any extended walks on the coast."
