New Knights Bridge celebrates Norfolk campaigner's legacy
Valerie Knights' contributions immortalised with bridge naming
Norfolk's local hero Valerie Knights has been honoured with the naming of a new bridge as part of the significant upgrade of the A47 road.
The newly named "Knights Bridge" spans the area connecting North Burlingham and Blofield, serving as a lasting tribute to Mrs Knights, who campaigned tirelessly for road safety improvements.
Her family gathered to witness the unveiling of the bridge sign, and her daughter, Carol Charles, expressed her happiness at seeing her mother's legacy preserved:
"She saw so many accidents, and campaigned so much for road safety, she would be amazed at what's being unveiled here."
As a resident of North Burlingham , Carol is also pleased that the bridge better connects her to Norwich and surrounding villages.
Chris Griffin, who led the Blofield project for National Highways, emphasised the importance of Valerie Knights contribution:
"Mrs Knights campaigned for greater safety on this stretch of road, and I know she would have been delighted to see the completion of the new dualling,
The new dual carriageway will mean a less congested, much safer road which will open the area up to business.
It is only right and fitting that we name this bridge after her, which will stand as a lasting legacy to her selfless work helping more than 100 people involved in collisions here."
Chris also spoke on the community behind building the bridge, saying its a 'Norfolk bridge for Norfolk people':
"This has been built by local people for local people, 65% of our workforce is from Norfolk"
The bridge is part of broader safety improvements on the A47, which includes updates such as the closure of the right turn at the Yarmouth Road junction in Blofield and a new lane added onto the roadway.
The National Highways is also focusing on introducing new cycle paths to link North Burlingham and Blofield.
Jerome Mayhew, Conservative MP for Broadland and Fakenham, spoke on the significance of Knights Bridge for the region.
He said: "It will be a huge relief for local residents to see the new dual carriageway open, relieving congestion and tackling some of the safety concerns of the old road.
Better road connections help our economy to grow and support local businesses."
