Man jailed after machete attack in Norwich

A man has been jailed for three and a half years, after a machete attack in Norwich, on Mothers' Day last year.
Jayden Gray, 19, of Newbegin Close, Norwich, was sentenced at Norwich Crown Court yesterday (Tuesday 7 July 2026), after previously admitting GBH with intent and possession of a bladed weapon.
The court heard that at around 3.20pm on 30th March 2025, Gray was walking with three other men along Bignold Road, when they spotted another man walking on the opposite side of the road. Grey, who was armed with a machete, ran with the others towards the man and attacked him.
The victim, a man in his 30s stained multiple injuries to his face, arms and legs. He also fell onto a car, which had been parked in the street, causing the window to smash.
The suspects, who were wearing balaclavas or face coverings, fled the scene. But, after extensive police inquiries, all four were traced to addresses in Norwich and were subsequently arrested and charged.
All four men were sentenced at the same court hearing yesterday:
Jayden Gray was sentenced to 42 months imprisonment.
Harvey Hulme, 22, of Magnolia Way, pleaded guilty to affray and possession of cannabis. He was sentenced to 16 months in prison, suspended for 21 months.
Marshall Mutota, 20, of Appleyard Crescent, pleaded guilty to affray, two counts of possessing a knife and possession of cannabis. He was handed an 18-month community order including a requirement to carry out 10 days of rehabilitation activity.
Kingsley Reid-Flemming, 20, of William Kett Close, pleaded guilty to affray and possession of cannabis. He was handed an 18 month community order including a requirement to carry out 15 days of rehabilitation activity and 12 months of mental health treatment.
After sentencing, Police Constable Daniel Briggs, of Norfolk Constabulary, said, “This violent attack was carried out openly, at a time when people should have been able to go about their weekend without fear.
"There is no justification for this level of offending and it has no place on our streets.
"Jayden Gray chose to carry a weapon and to engage in serious violence - I hope the fact he is now in prison sends a clear message that those who make the same choices will be put before the courts."
