Emergency repairs are set to begin on Hunstanton's promenade on today (2nd March), after recent storms caused significant damage to the coastal defences, resulting in a partial collapse of the surface.

High tides and strong winds earlier this month eroded beach material at the seawall's base, allowing waves to carve out the ground beneath the promenade.

This led to a portion of the surface being cordoned off for public safety.

Cabinet Member for Environment and Coastal at the borough council, Cllr Sandra Squire, highlighted the importance of maintaining coastal defences.

She said: “The recent collapse shows just how powerful winter storms can be and why maintaining our coastal defences is so important.

We have worked with Natural England, the Environment Agency, the Marine Management Organisation and the RSPB to ensure the emergency works can proceed safely and without environmental impact.

These repairs do not replace the planned long‑term capital project to rebuild the coastal defences.

“These emergency works will make the promenade safe again while we continue progressing the long‑term plan for our coastal defences.

Thank you to residents, businesses and visitors for their patience while this essential work takes place.”

Specialist contractor Southbay Civil Engineering Ltd will undertake the repairs.

The plan involves installing sheet piling at the seawall's base and carefully filling the void with concrete.

The work, expected to take at least two weeks, will be carried out during daylight hours and suitable tidal conditions.

While repairs are underway, a 140-metre stretch of the promenade will remain closed.

Additionally, a temporary works compound will be established in the South Prom Car Park.
