West Norfolk Council's planning committee has given the green light to the expansion of a housing estate in Downham Market, Norfolk, which will now include over 300 homes.

The approval includes 114 new houses off Bridle Lane as part of the second phase of Persimmon Homes' development known as The Willows, taking the total number of homes to 340.

Original plans earmarked the land for "at least 250" homes, but the council's planning officer noted that the development has grown beyond initial predictions.

Concerns were raised by the NHS, which warned that the influx of new residents would strain local healthcare services unless additional funds are provided to expand facilities.

The homes near the village of Wimbotsham faced objections from the parish council over traffic safety on Lynn Road and from residents about overdevelopment and infrastructure issues.

A legal agreement, pending signature, will see Persimmon contributing nearly £890,000 towards local schools, transport, libraries, and healthcare.

Despite objections, Downham Market Town Council backed the scheme with conditions and reassurance over emergency access.

Persimmon detailed that their plans have undergone thorough consultation to ensure they deliver quality homes that address housing needs.

Twenty-three homes, equating to 20%, will be classified as affordable.
