A local charity is urging people to help make sure the Christmas period isn't centre around food and eating.

It's as one and a quarter million people in the UK suffer from an eating disorder of some kind, according to Beat.

These figures also show that a quarter of all those suffering from an eating disorder in the UK are men.

"Speak to somebody"

Kerri Fleming is the group's head of safeguarding:

"We see a lot of people contact us unsure about how to best support people with an eating disorder and how to plan ahead

"Calls such as, how do I have a conversation with my son/daughter/friend or partner.

She has this advice for somebody if they get overwhelmed:

"Speak to somebody in your vicinity, like a close family friend or somebody who they trust.

"However, if that's not possible at that time, BEAT will be open on Christmas and there's an online support group being held that evening from 6.45pm to 7.45pm"
