Safety warning issued for Broads visitors ahead of busy bank holiday weekend
Broads Authority urges care and precaution on the waterways
Visitors to the Broads are being urged to prioritise safety on the waterways as another busy bank holiday weekend begins.
According to the Broads Authority, even seasoned enthusiasts can encounter unforeseen hazards, as highlighted by an incident involving an experienced mariner just last year.
David, a veteran of over 40 years in Broadland craft, suffered a mishap after neglecting to put on a life jacket while preparing his boat for a routine pump-out trip.
A sudden gust of wind caused him to lose balance, hit his head, and fall into the water, leaving him unconscious.
Fortunately, thanks to prompt action from nearby individuals and emergency services, David was rescued and recovered in hospital.
Matt Dane, the Head of Safety Management at the Broads Authority, emphasised the importance of life jackets:
“The message is clear. When moving around a boat, preparing it for use, getting on and off it, or when casting off and mooring, it is always essential to wear a life jacket. Wearing a life jacket is the easiest and best thing you can do to protect yourself.”
Efforts to enhance water safety are part of the Authority's ongoing initiatives, particularly during warmer months as visitor numbers surge.
Collaborations include the RNLI’s 'National Prevention of Death by Drowning Week' and regular 'Super Safety Days' with Broads Rangers available to assist at popular locations.
In addition, stickers raising awareness about the risks of propellors have been distributed to boat hire businesses, alongside educational content on social media to highlight potential dangers.
