A woman has avoided jailed after being handed a suspended sentence following a dog attack on a police officer in Shropshire.

Jade Davies, 25 of Woodlands Park Road, Birmingham was sentenced to 13 months in prison, suspended for two years, after being in possession of a dangerous dog.

In March 2024, Davies was at a house in Isherwoods Way, Wem, when the dog bit a West Mercia Police officer on the forearm and leg. The officer sustained a deep laceration but has since made a full recovery.

A destruction order has been made for the dog, a Pit Bull, a breed which is banned in the UK.

Davies has also been sentenced to a 20-day rehabilitation order, and eighty hours of unpaid work.

PC Jack Harper said “Any incident where a person is injured by a dangerous dog is one too many. We have a responsibility to protect the public and safeguard our communities.

“This case exemplifies the harm that can be caused, and how by working with partners offenders can be brought to justice.

“We continue to work closely with various partners on educating people on the risks posed by some dogs. There is a responsibility on all of us to ensure that we do all we can to keep people safe through responsible dog ownership, to ultimately reduce the risk posed to the public.”
