A uniform pop-up shop in the West Midlands has told us parents are struggling to afford a coat for their children this winter.

Simply School Supplies in Birmingham, Walsall and Dudley said every coat they had was given to families that need it, at their latest pop-up.

300,000 children going without...

The latest research from children's charity 'Barnardo's' suggested there could be around 300,000 children in the UK without a winter coat.

Around 15% of parents surveyed by YouGov for the charity said they will struggle to afford a coat or warm clothing to keep their children warm this winter.

While around 2% of children said they do not have a winter coat.

'Trying our best to meet demand'

Elizabeth Dorsey from Simply School Supplies told us they had parents queueing up for help:

"We have got over 20 orders and we are trying our best to meet demand for coats and shoes as we head into the coldest season.

"Every single coat we had in stock is gone. We have officially only one pair of trousers left in stock," she said.

'These are basic necessities'

Elizabeth said she was surprised by the level of demand: "We are seeing the same numbers as what we see before a new school term.

"The only difference now is that rather than wanting branded uniform, they are asking for new coats and shoes. These are basic necessities, that is scary," she said.

Simply School Supplies relies on donations. They run a pop-up shop each month at St Colombus CofE Church, in Sutton Coldfield.
