"We might need to wear masks because of the smell." Warm weather worsening impact of Birmingham bin strikes, warn residents

As Birmingham's bin strikes pass 100 days, we have heard how people and businesses are continuing to be impacted.

Workers downed tools in a dispute with the city council over pay and conditions, which remains unresolved.

Sohail Raza lives in Balsall Heath and told us how the area is still being impacted.

"We might need to wear covid masks again because the smell is that bad.

"You're looking at kids as well being around rubbish - there's a high chance of more diseases being spread around and right now it's just not a nice place to be," he said.

Talks between Birmingham City Council and Unite the Union - who are representing the bin workers - are ongoing.

They are being mediated by conciliation service Acas.

Sohail works for an organisation providing supported accommodation to vulnerable adults in Birmingham.

He said the strikes have been impacting their finances.

"We are having to get private contractors out and order more skips," he said.

"We're having to hire more staff just to clear the rubbish - even though a lot of it is not even ours."

Sohail also said other problems had increased as a result of uncollected rubbish in the area.

"I think fly-tipping has increased substantially since the bin strikes because there are certain individuals that are taking advantage," he said.

"As soon as they see a pile of rubbish, people start piling on it. Next thing you know, instead of having skyscraper towers we have rubbish towers."

Strike action began in response to Birmingham City Council's plans to scrap a waste recycling role, which Unite said would have left some workers with pay losses of up to £8,000 a year.

In April, Unite said bin lorry drivers were also facing pay losses of £8,000 under new council plans.

Birmingham City Council has maintained it has made a "fair and reasonable" offer to bin workers.
