Walsall FC aiming to beat AFC Wimbledon at Wembley for League One place
The Saddlers' haven't played in League One since 2019
Thousands of Walsall FC fans are heading to Wembley this afternoon to watch their side face AFC Wimbledon in the League Two play off final.
A win would see them promoted back to League One for the first time since 2019.
Former Walsall goalkeeper Jimmy Walker - who was part of three promotion-winning teams in the nineties and early noughties - says it's important for the team to be mentally prepared.
“These occasions don’t come round that often. You have to take it by the scruff of the neck, you have to grab the opportunity, you have to give everything you’ve got out there and if it’s your time you get over the line.”
Jimmy also said it’s important the players don't let self doubt get to them.
“You can’t help but have that self-doubt, you can’t have the apprehension creep in.
But it’s about being able to handle that and how to handle the nerves and the adrenaline and that nervous energy you’re going to feel when you’re out there,” he said.
We also spoke to some Saddlers fans who are hoping to see the club get promoted.
Harley Sheldon said: “It’s an incredible moment for the football club, even though we should’ve been promoted a long time ago, it’s still a privilege to get to go and play at Wembley.”
Another fan, Wayne Smith, told us he’d be happy to see Walsall back in League One.
“It’s about time we got back into League One, that is our long term historical position to be in League One,” he said.
Kick off is at 3:01pm.
