New underground map aims to transform roadworks and improve safety in Birmingham

Digital map could reduce disruption and streamline infrastructure projects across the city

Birmingham roadworks could soon be less disruptive thanks to a new digital map created by Ordnance Survey, designed to improve planning and boost safety for construction workers.

The NUAR map combines utility data from separate organisations into a single system. This allows planners to access essential underground information in seconds, instead of spending up to six days cross-checking paper maps. For projects in Birmingham, accidental strikes on buried pipes and cables – estimated at 60,000 annually across the UK – could be avoided, helping workers stay safe and reducing delays for local communities.

NUAR’s efficiencies are expected to deliver major financial and operational benefits for public works and infrastructure projects across the region.

The map now covers 80% of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland after BT Openreach added its 550,000km network. Ordnance Survey is urging utilities still outside the project to join so NUAR can be completed fully.

Ash Wheeler, Chief Product Officer at Ordnance Survey, and Carsten Ronsdorf, NUAR Product Manager, are offering live interviews to discuss the impact NUAR could have on Birmingham, its communities, and the broader infrastructure sector.
