Two gunmen who tried to shoot dead four people in Birmingham, leaving a man partially paralysed for life have been convicted of four counts of attempted murder.
The court heard Tyrese Henry aged 22 and 20 year-old Mikey Large travelled to the Sutton Coldfield area on high-powered E bikes, in search of a rival gang member.
The masked men pulled up outside a property on Mount View on the Falcon Lodge estate at around 11.20pm on 31 January this year, where three friends had gathered on a balcony.
One of the attackers shouted up to the group, demanding to speak to someone that he gave the name of. He was told the man wasn’t there, but the gunman then fired three shots towards the group.
One of the victims was hit in the leg, arm and chest, with one of the bullets becoming lodged in his spine. He will be paralysed from the waist down for life. A second man escaped injury, while the woman they were with was grazed by a bullet.
The riders sped off from the scene, but were pursued by a BMW driver who was suspicious of them.
One of the riders fell off their bike near Berryfields Road, before more shots were fired towards the BMW driver, hitting his car.
West Midlands Police launched a major investigation and tracked the riders using CCTV as they covered a distance of 21 miles on the night of the shooting.
They were identified as Henry and Large, and although it’s never been revealed who fired the shots, both have today been convicted for four counts of attempted murder, and of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.
Henry, aged 22, of Javelin Avenue, Castle Vale, and Large, aged 20, of Padgate Close, Castle Vale, will be sentenced at 30 November.
Henry’s girlfriend, Laney Jones, aged 32, of Northolt Drive, Castle Vale, was found guilty of two charges of assisting an offender by helping Henry by providing transport for him after the shootings. She will also be sentenced on 30 November.
Det Insp Francis Nock, from our Major Crime Unit, led the investigation.
He said: “These were indiscriminate shootings which could easily have resulted in the deaths of a number of people. The three people who were on the balcony were not connected to gangs, and were just enjoying a night together.
“We believe Large and Henry were members of a gang based in Castle Vale, which had been in a long-running dispute with a rival gang, and they were seeking out a member of that rival group on the night of the shootings.
“Large and Henry showed complete disregard for innocent bystanders. Even when they realised the person they were after wasn’t present on the balcony, they still tried to kill the people who were.
“Our investigation uncovered CCTV footage showing Large riding one of the bikes in the hours before the shooting, and also music videos showing him performing just a few metres away from the scene of the shooting, which had been filmed some time before.
“The man who was left paralysed, who’s never been in trouble with the police, will never be able to walk again.
“Large and Henry will have plenty of time to reflect on that while they spend the coming years behind bars.”
