Two men have been charged with murder and conspiracy to rob following the death of an elderly man in Birmingham.

Neil O'Donnell, 83, was approached by a man who demanded his watch and phone before assaulting him with a screwdriver, on Cateswell Road, Hall Green, at around 2.30pm on 14 May.

The man fled empty-handed, but Mr O’Donnell suffered an arm injury and was taken to hospital for treatment and later discharged.

He was re-admitted to hospital on 17 May, and sadly died on 21 May.

Wesley McDonnell, 46, and Tony Griffin, 54, were arrested the following day. In the early hours of Saturday 25 May, they were charged with murder and conspiracy to rob and remanded in custody to appear before city magistrates.

Det Insp Nigel Box, leading the investigation today, said: "Our thoughts are with Mr O’Donnell’s family today, and we are continuing to offer them all the support we can.

"They have asked for their privacy to be respected as they come to terms with their loss."
