A Birmingham man has been jailed after a warrant found a live submachine gun and ammunition in his bedroom in Handsworth.
The submachine gun was found with 176 rounds of ammunition.
Experts examined the weapon and bullets and confirmed they were live and viable.
The 44-year-old handed himself into police after the warrant. He was then charged with possession of an automatic firearm and possession of ammunition.
Yesterday (24th July) he was sentenced to five years for firearms possession and two years for the ammunition possession, to be served concurrently.
PC Richardson from West Midlands Police's Major Crime Proactive team, said: "This was a significant recovery of a lethal automatic weapon and a significant quantity of ammunition which could have caused tremendous loss of life.
"We are committed to taking all weapons, including firearms, off the streets and will continue to take proactive action to arrest and prosecute the people who carry them.
"If you suspect someone you know might be storing a firearm, let us know either directly to us, or anonymously via Crimestoppers."
