Storm Goretti brings snow and strong winds to the West Midlands
Trains to run on reduced timetable as passengers urged to plan ahead
Heavy snow and strong winds are expected to disrupt travel across the West Midlands as Storm Goretti approaches.
Starting on Thursday 8th January, train services will operate on a reduced timetable from 7pm and passengers are being urged to check their journeys in advance.
The Met Office has issued amber weather warnings for snow, with forecasts predicting up to 30cm of snowfall across large areas. These conditions are expected from Thursday afternoon and will continue into Friday 9th January.
Network Rail teams are taking precautionary measures ahead of the storm, including treating tracks and station surfaces as well as keeping points clear of snow.
“We’re working hard with our train operator partners to prepare the rail network for this weather,” Martin Colmey, operations director for Network Rail Central route, said.
"The safety of passengers and colleagues is our priority and a reduced timetable has been implemented so that we can continue to safely run trains for essential journeys. I would urge passengers to check before they travel as there will be disruption to services during the extreme weather.”
Snow and ice can severely impact train operations by blocking points, which are used to move trains between tracks. They can also cause ice to form on overhead power cables, preventing trains from drawing electricity and leaving them stranded. Additionally, icicles from tunnels, bridges, and structures can damage trains and power cables.
Passengers planning to travel in the affected areas are advised to take extra care and stay updated on the conditions.
