School street scheme expansion proposed for Solihull
Coppice Primary School could join an initiative to reduce traffic near the site
An initiative aiming to create safer travel conditions for students in Solihull is proposed to be extended.
The School Streets scheme involves closing roads to traffic outside primary schools during pick-up and drop-off times, allowing only street residents with permits and blue badge holders to access.
Solihull Council employs a traffic regulation order to enforce the closure at several schools, including Cranmore Infant School, Haslucks Green Junior School, Marston Green Infant Academy, Oak Cottage Primary School, and others.
A report prepared ahead of the cabinet member for environment and infrastructure's decision session highlights the scheme's successes over several years, citing reduced car usage for school journeys. For instance, car usage dropped from 31% to 8% at Oak Cottage Primary School.
Residents near participating schools have reported reduced inconsiderate parking, increased support for the scheme post-implementation, and safer school journeys.
Expansion is proposed to include Coppice Primary School. With 70% of the school's pupils living within one mile, the proposal is supported by the school. There are alternative parking options within walking distance for those travelling by car.
Councillor Ken Hawkins has praised the scheme, noting its success in promoting safer, sustainable school journeys, reducing parking pressures, and improving air quality surrounding schools.
