Real estate firm Sarao Estates denies unlicensed flat charges in Birmingham HMO properties
Managing Director pleads not guilty; trial set for January next year
Real estate firm Sarao Estates appeared at Birmingham Magistrates Court this week, facing charges related to having unlicensed flats in two HMOs (Houses in Multiple Occupation) in Birmingham.
Managing Director Sumeet Singh Sarao represented the firm, pleading not guilty to all eight charges under the Housing Act 2004.
The charges revolve around two neighboring properties on Dolphin Road, Tyseley, alleged to be operating without selective licensing for the six flats within them during November last year.
Prosecutors stated the failure to license the properties violated regulations, prompting legal action from Birmingham City Council.
During the hearing, Mr. Sarao asserted that the properties now adhere to licensing requirements and were licensed during the alleged offenses, with licenses activated in October 2024 and August 2025.
He explained complications in acquiring licenses for individual flats due to registration issues but clarified they now meet compliance.
The court adjourned the case for a trial scheduled for January 11, 2027, allowing time for further examination of licensing details.
This case highlights the importance of regulatory compliance within the real estate sector, underscoring accountability towards housing standards.
