A drug dealer has been convicted of wounding and serious assault after ramming a car into two police officers in Walsall.

Saqib Ali, 29, from Mere Road in Birmingham, was approached by three officers on 24 February 2024 as he slept in his car on Reservoir Place. One officer, PC Bull, talked to Ali who was at the wheel, and suspected him to be under the influence of drugs or drink.

Another officer, PC Kidd, stood to the front of the vehicle.

PC Bull opened the door to prepare a search of the vehicle. However, Ali put the car into gear and drove forward, essentially trapping PC Kidd between the bonnet and the police van. PC Bull was also trapped between Ali's door and the van.

Bodycam footage show the two officers shout and plead to be released.

After 30 seconds, Ali reverses and PC Bull struggles with him and tasers him. Ali was able to drive off.

Both PCs required hospital treatment, with PC Kidd needing surgery and rehabilitation for serious leg injuries.

Detective Sergeant Phil Hinton, from our Major Crime Unit, said: “This was a very distressing incident for all officers involved with two officers left injured. Bodycam footage captured the shocking incident but it also proved to be vital as a crucial part of the evidence in this case.

“Ali was quickly apprehended, brought before the court and now faces years behind bars following his conviction.”

Ali was arrested the following day on Nelson Street in Oldbury. He was searched and Class A drugs were found.

Ali was found guilty of both wounding and a S47 assault following a trial at Birmingham Crown Court which concluded this week. Ali had previously pleaded guilty to two charges of possession of class A drugs with intent to supply.

He will be sentenced at a later date.
