A new PlayZone in Smethwick is helping children to feel safe when going out to play with their friends.

Nine are being installed across Sandwell.

What is a PlayZone?

The PlayZones are multi use games areas, which allow children to play a variety of games including: football, basketball and netball.

They have been funded by the Football Foundation, Sandwell Council and the government. The programme is intended to target communities 'with the greatest need'.

There is an emphasis on making the PlayZones safe, inclusive and accessible.

'Makes it feel a lot safer'

Noah, Louie and Laura spoke to us when they went to play a game of football at the brand new PlayZone in West Smethwick Park:

"Everyone worries about being safe when you go out with your friends. There is a fence and lights which make it feel a lot safer," said Noah.

"It is something to do instead of sitting inside all the time," said Louie.

'Do not be scared'

Laura told us she was happy to have a space where she could get involved with football. She had this message for other young girls:

"Be brave and happy with who you are playing with, do not be scared," she said.

Councillor Suzanne Hartwell is deputy leader at Sandwell Council and told us why she wanted the PlayZones in the borough:

'Feel assured your child will be safe'

"I am a mum and a grandparent. It is very important for people to feel safe when they are out in the community.

"Something like this, you can feel assured your child will be safe playing.

"I would be very happy for my grandchildren to play in a facility like this," she said.
