A male voice choir from Kingswinford has joined the likes of musical greats, having recorded an EP at the legendary Abbey Road Studios.

The Gentlemen Songsters headed to London to record their rendition of The Empty Can's 'Black Country Anthem', among other songs including 'Nessun Dorma'.

The 48-member choir worked with original lyricist James Stevens - who wrote words of 'The Black Country Anthem' to the tune of 'I Vow to Thee, My Country' 10 years ago - and their own musical director, Ray Curran, to convert it into a four voice score for a male voice choir.

"It definitely had an aura about it," said singer David Fyfe, talking about being in the studio.

"And the history, you just felt it in your blood, really.

"We followed in some, obviously some very famous footsteps and it was just a fantastic day from start to finish.

"We actually recorded in studio two, which is where the Beatles preferred to do their recordings.

"And the guys, I mean, we're all of a certain age - the average age of the choir is 75, so we're sort of hitting the the hot spot of people that grew up in the Beatles era.

"For a lot of them, I think it became quite emotional."

All of the proceeds made from the choir's EP will be donated to the Maggie's cancer charity with one member being an ambassador for the organisation.

The group hope the money raised will help increase Maggie's provisions in the West Midlands, especially in the Black Country.

David continued: "It was a fantastic experience for all the guys.

"As I say, we're all of a certainage, so this was a once in a lifetime event for everyone.

"It was a fabulous day."
