"It will go down in history." Legacy of Black Sabbath concert will live on, says music expert

While Black Sabbath's farewell concert may be over, we're hearing from a music expert who says their legacy will last forever.
The band played their final ever show in front of 45,000 fans at Villa Park on Saturday.
Heavy metal expert and Birmingham City University (BCU) lecturer in Media and Popular Music Culture, Dr Asya Draganova, told us Black Sabbath will leave a legacy in both Birmingham and across the world.
“I realise that the show “Back to the Beginning” is far from the end for Ozzy and Sabbath as their appeal to new generations of fans will live on and on," she said.
“I’ve worked here for just under a decade, and I must say – not even the German Christmas market that takes over town in December can compare to that electrifying expectation, the rivers of fans on pilgrimage to the birthplace of metal, that created the feeling that we were living in a festival that had spilled over onto the streets."
Asya said she thinks Black Sabbath should become part of Birmingham's 'brand' - akin to The Beatles' role in Liverpool's cultural identity.
“I was 15 when I saw Black Sabbath for the first time at their only ever show in Bulgaria, which was my first big gig. In preparation to that show, I sat down and tried hard to learn the lyrics to all their songs with pretty good success," she said.
Asya told us the band's influence - despite their humble beginnings - is still felt strongly today.
“Ozzy Osborne and Sabbath are a fantastic source of inspiration for our students at BCU," she said.
"And isn’t it amazing that a group of working-class boys from Aston developed a global genre and achieved mega stardom, but never forgot where they came from, and always celebrated their background?”
Black Sabbath have sold over 70 million records worldwide and are one of the best-selling heavy metal bands of all time - a genre they are widely credited with creating.
