The family of a man that died in a house fire in Hockley have paid tribute to him as 'one of a kind'.

63-year-old Louis Campbell was identified following the fire on Barr Street on August 17th 2025.

A man in his 60s was arrested yesterday (03rd Sept) on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter. He has been released on police bail as enquiries continue.

Emergency services say the blaze was not started deliberately.

Mr Campbell's family shared this tribute to him: "We are devastated by the sudden and unexpected passing of our much-loved Louis Campbell, known to many as Louis Poet.

"He was truly one of a kind — cherished amongst his brothers and sisters and a devoted uncle to many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

"His loss has left a deep and irreplaceable hole in our lives. Louis had a rare gift for accepting people exactly as they were, with a giving nature that touched everyone he met.

"He shared a loving, long-term partnership with Kirsty, who knew him as a steadfast companion and constant support. Beyond family, Louis was a vibrant presence in Birmingham’s music and poetry scene.

"With his studio in the heart of the city, he opened doors for others, mentoring new talent and creating a space where creativity could thrive.

"From performing with International Beat to countless open-mic nights in many of our city’s pubs and venues, his voice and spirit brought people together.

"We, his brothers, sisters and family, will miss him more than words can ever express. His absence has left us heartbroken, and we are struggling to come to terms with such a devastating loss."
