Blackheath is set to honour local footballing hero Tommy Smart today (Saturday, 28 February) with a special event celebrating his life and career.

Smart, who passed away in 1968, began his football journey at Halesowen before gaining fame with Aston Villa.

The defender also earned five caps for England and was remembered as a true Black Country character, known for his commanding presence on the pitch.

The celebration was sparked after Councillor Jag Singh discovered that Tommy’s family still live locally. His relatives will gather at the Sons of Rest, Britannia Park, for the unveiling of a commemorative plaque.

The event highlights that people from Sandwell can achieve great things when they combine talent with determination.

Blackheath Councillor, Jag Singh said:

“I first heard about Tommy through his family, who are still part of our Blackheath community today. When we launched the Sandwell Story last year, our goal was to show local people that they can succeed in any path they choose.

"It really struck me that we once had a local lad who went on to play for our national team. He deserves to be remembered – and he deserves to be an inspiration for young people in Blackheath today, reminding them that they can dream big and achieve great things too.

"I’m really glad we’ve been able to bring Tommy’s family together to celebrate his life and everything he achieved. Moments like this aren’t just about looking back – they’re about inspiring others too.

"I want young people in Sandwell to see that they can aim for anything they dream of. With hard work and determination, you can build your future right here in Sandwell.”

The event will feature speeches from local councillors and Sandwell Council Leader Kerrie Carmichael, as well as the attendance of Tommy’s family.
