Face covering ban in place in Birmingham city centre for planned protest
New police powers are in place as groups gather to protest in the city centre
A ban on face coverings is in place in parts of Birmingham city centre today as groups gather to protest.
The powers came into effect at 10am and will remain in place until 8pm today (Sunday 4 October).
Anyone who covers their face to avoid being identified could be arrested under the new powers.
There are exemptions for face coverings worn for religious, health or work-related reasons.
A West Midlands Police spokesperson said "We respect people's right to freedom of expression and peaceful protest. Those rights are fundamental in a democratic society.
"However, where restrictions have been lawfully put in place, officers will take action against people who deliberately refuse to comply with them.
"These powers exist to help prevent crime and disorder, ensure communities feel safe, and support the safe policing of protests. Where the legal threshold is met, we will use these powers fairly, proportionately and without favour.
"We will always seek to apply the law impartially while protecting both public safety and the rights of those attending protests."
Anyone with concerns is being asked to speak to officers in the area or call 101. In an emergency, call 999.
