Birmingham Airport is preparing for its busiest Christmas on record, with more than half a million passengers expected to travel through the terminal over the festive period.

Al Titterington, Terminal Operations Director at Birmingham Airport, said: “It’s going to be our busiest Christmas ever — we’re expecting over half a million customers to travel through the airport during the festive period.”

He said travel numbers will start to rise sharply in the coming days, adding: “That will really start to ramp up over this weekend through to Christmas Eve, and then through the festive period thereafter.”

Popular destinations include European city breaks and warmer winter sun locations. Mr Titterington said: “Places like Amsterdam, Paris and Dublin are always top destinations,” alongside “Lanzarote, Tenerife, the Canary Islands and even further afield to places like Dubai.”

Passengers are being reminded to plan ahead and follow security guidance, particularly when travelling with gifts. Mr Titterington said: “Please don’t wrap your presents, because if the tray gets rejected, our security officers will need to look at those items.”

He added that the airport is fully prepared for the festive rush, saying: “We’re geared up in terms of our colleagues and resources… and we’ll manage them and make sure they have a fantastic experience and get Christmas off to the right start.”
