Birmingham Airport has announced a multi-million-dollar financial support package to attract direct flights between Birmingham and New York, underlining its commitment to expanding long-haul connections.

The airport says that connectivity to the US is currently underserved, with nearly half a million passengers from the West Midlands forced to fly to other UK airports for direct transatlantic flights every year. In 2024, approximately 1.88 million passengers from the wider Birmingham area travelled to the US, equivalent to more than 5,100 daily passengers.

The new multi-year financial incentive will see Birmingham Airport invest several million dollars to secure daily scheduled services to New York, starting from summer 2027. This launch is planned to coincide with the Invictus Games in Birmingham, which is expected to bring global attention and demand for improved connectivity. The support package also includes marketing and operational incentives to help airlines establish the route.

Direct US flights are a strategic priority for Birmingham Airport, responding to strong demand from businesses, regional investors, universities, and exporters. Birmingham is the UK’s second-largest city, with a fast-growing, diverse population and a regional economy worth £77 billion. Major companies in the area include Jaguar Land Rover, JCB, Aston Martin, and Collins Aerospace.

Nick Barton, CEO of Birmingham Airport, said: “We have been in discussions with airlines who reassure us that direct US connectivity will return to BHX. The demand and business case are clear. This financial offer shows our determination to secure this vital link. Re-establishing direct flights to New York will be transformational for the West Midlands.”

West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker added: “Direct US flights from Birmingham Airport will boost trade, tourism, and investment, which are vital to our region’s growth. The airport’s offer sends a strong message that the West Midlands is open for global business. I fully support every effort to make this happen for BHX and the people we serve.”

Since April 2025, Birmingham Airport has experienced its most successful period to date, with nine months of record-breaking growth. To keep pace with rising demand, the airport is undertaking a £300 million capital investment programme over four years. Recent upgrades include new security halls, terminal and airfield improvements, and enhancements to baggage and immigration processes, alongside expanded food and retail options.

The airport continues to work directly with airlines to advance this financial incentive and bring back the critical transatlantic route.
