A woman accused of attempting to murder a child was caught red-handed by a hidden camera as she tried to tamper with his medication, a jury has heard.
Emma Jane Williams, of Erdington, Birmingham, was arrested in January this year, having conducted internet searches for “the worst thing you could mix” with medicine being taken by the boy, the city’s Crown Court was told.
Opening the Crown’s case against Williams on Tuesday, prosecutor Timothy Harrington said Williams “was plotting the demise” of the alleged victim, who cannot be identified due to a court order.
Williams, 41, denies a single count of attempted murder alleged to have been committed on the date of her arrest.
Alleging that Williams had used her mobile phone to search for the effects of specific liquids on certain types of medicine, Mr Harrington told jurors: “The defendant tried to kill (the boy) and she did so by interfering with his important medication on a number of occasions.”
Williams’ conduct was “not a one-off” but was “considered, planned, deliberate action” designed to end the boy’s life, the prosecutor said.
Mr Harrington added: “She also researched how to do it and acted upon it. She has never given any sensible explanation for the evidence against her.”
After asserting that the only explanation for the evidence is one of guilt, the Crown’s barrister played hidden camera footage to the court and told the jury: “Unfortunately for her she was caught red-handed.
“This wasn’t a moment of madness, this was deliberate. This was no accident, this was no mistake.
“Emma Williams has never given a sensible explanation for that footage. The true horror of what she did was revealed when she was caught on that covert footage.”
The trial continues.
