A 12-year-old boy accused of sexually assaulting and wounding a woman in her 60s has been remanded into secure accommodation.

The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at Birmingham Youth Court where he indicated not guilty pleas to the charges.

He also denied separate allegations of intentional strangulation and theft.

District Judge David Murray ordered that the defendant be remanded into youth detention following legal submissions during a 45-minute hearing. His mother and sister were present in court.

He is due to appear next at Birmingham Crown Court on April 21.

West Midlands Police said the woman remains in a serious condition in hospital after she was found at an address in Birmingham last week.

The force confirmed the boy has been charged with wounding and sexual assault, as well as a separate count of theft and an allegation of intentional strangulation linked to an earlier incident.
