Five men have been arrested as part of an investigation into an alleged courier fraud operation targeting elderly residents in Wolverhampton.

Police said several victims, mostly people in their 80s, received telephone calls from individuals claiming to be police officers.

They were allegedly told to withdraw substantial amounts of cash and place the money in envelopes for a supposed officer to collect.

At least four incidents were reported across the city during the past week. In two cases, residents withdrew more than £10,000 between them before the money was collected by fraudsters.

Officers from the economic crime unit launched an investigation into the reports.

Five 19-year-old men were subsequently arrested after a vehicle was stopped in London on Thursday evening.

The suspects remain in police custody while officers question them on suspicion of conspiracy to commit fraud.

Police are continuing their enquiries and have urged residents to be cautious when receiving unexpected calls asking for money or personal information.
