Hundreds of volunteers have helped remove 327kg of rubbish from beaches across Dorset ahead of the Bank Holiday.

The 35th annual ‘Great Dorset Beach Clean’ was organised by Litter Free Dorset, who hailed the event “a great success”.

The week-long event involved 13 local groups and saw 130 bags filled with waste, including unusual items like schoolbooks and car tyres.

Among some other items there were beach roll mats, fishing gear, socks as well as some more common items like cigarette butts, plastic wrappers, glass bottles and cans.

But volunteers say The Great Dorset Beach Clean is far more than just picking up rubbish, it’s about helping the environment and “fostering community spirit”.

A spokesperson said: “Volunteers enjoy the experience of giving back, meeting like-minded people and working together towards a common goal.

The event is about ‘protecting the coast’ and sees litter patrols on 15 beaches across the county.
