A man has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker and causing criminal damage after an incident in Weymouth.

Police responded to reports this afternoon (February 12th) of a male attacking an ambulance staff member at Custom House Quay, punching them in the head multiple times, before urinating inside the ambulance.

The incident occurred while ambulance workers were treating the man.

Police assisted ambulance staff to ensure the male was safely assessed before he was transferred to a cell van to be taken to custody.

The ambulance is currently out of service while it undergoes cleaning.

A spokesperson for Weymouth & Portland Police said:

"Earlier this afternoon our wonderful Ambulance colleagues were treating a male on Custom House Quay when it is reported that he decided to punch one of them in the head multiple times before urinating inside the ambulance.

"We were nearby and arrested the male on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker and criminal damage.

"We assisted Ambulance to allow them to safely assess the male before we changed transport and put him in our cell van to taken him to custody.

"No one should go to work with the expectation of being assaulted, and the ambulance is now out of action until it has been cleaned ready for the next person who needs their help."
