Weymouth Lifeboat say their thoughts go out to the family and friends of a kite surfer who died at Portland Harbour.

Emergency crews were called yesterday afternoon - after reports that they were in difficulty in the water.

They were recovered and given first aid - but sadly died at the scene.

Sharing details about the case on Facebook, crews said: "Weymouth inshore lifeboat was tasked by HM Coastguard and launched at approximately 13:35 to assist with an incident in Portland Harbour today.

"Persons aboard a yacht anchored in the harbour had reported seeing a kite surfer in difficulty in the water.

"Our volunteer crew aboard the ILB arrived on scene shortly after to find the kite surfer being recovered from the water by the Portland harbour patrol boat.

"The casualty was then transferred to Portland harbour jetty where first aid was administered by the harbour staff and RNLI ILB crew.

"The Emergency Response doctor and local ambulance crew also attended the scene.

"Very sadly the casualty was declared dead by a doctor on scene.

"While this rescue was taking place there was further report of a second missing wind surfer so the Weymouth all weather lifeboat and HM coastguard helicopter were tasked with a search. The person was located safe and that search was stood down.

"This was a very tragic incident, and our thoughts go out to the family and friends.

"The ILB was stood down by HM Coastguard and returned to station, at 14:47, where it was washed down refilled and made ready for service."
