Four-month roadworks to begin in Bournemouth as council pushes bus travel improvements
Roadworks lasting around four months will begin on Bournemouth’s Westover Road in January, as part of BCP Council’s plans to improve bus travel
Major roadworks are set to begin in Bournemouth early next year as part of plans to improve bus services across the town.
BCP Council has confirmed that work along Westover Road will start on the 12th of January and is expected to last until late April.
The scheme forms a key part of the council’s Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP), a long-term programme designed to make buses more reliable, accessible and appealing for everyday journeys.
The plan focuses on improving passenger facilities, prioritising buses on busy routes and enhancing safety and accessibility across the network.
Along Westover Road, the southern side of the street will see significant accessibility upgrades. These include widening and levelling the footway, relaying paving and improving the overall street layout.
New, larger bus shelters will be installed, featuring real-time passenger information displays and CCTV.
The works will also include improved signage, upgraded street lighting and the removal of three old tree stumps.
Traffic disruption is expected throughout the project. A temporary closure of the left-hand lane will be in place between the Pavilion car park exit and the Gervis Place traffic lights.
Further disruption is anticipated later in 2026, when Westover Road is due to fully close between Bath Road roundabout and Gervis Place for resurfacing works.
BCP Council says the improvements are aimed at delivering long-term benefits for passengers, despite the short-term inconvenience.
