The fire ravaged site of the Gorge Café in Dorchester has been handed over to contractors to maintain safety and start the clean-up process.

The site on South Street was destroyed in a blaze in December, with part of South Street still cordoned off.

Dorset Council's Building Control Team have today (Thursday 30th January) been meeting with the owner's appointed contractors to assess the area.

They'll now be removing dangerous masonry panels, clearing fire-damaged materials and putting up scaffolding to secure the remains of the building.

It's expected that work will start next week before the other building affected can then also have scaffolding erected and a new hoarding can be constructed.

No timescale can be given on that part, but it will mean pedestrian access can be reinstated past the scene.

That section of the road will stay closed to traffic for the foreseeable though.
