Counter-terrorism police have arrested a man and a woman following an arson attack at a former synagogue in Whitechapel, East London.

The 45-year-old man and 52-year-old woman were taken into custody on suspicion of conspiracy to commit arson, related to an incident at the building on Nelson Street that occurred early Tuesday morning.

Ongoing investigation

Commander Helen Flanagan, Head of CTP London, emphasized the significance of the arrests: “Today’s arrests are a significant step in our investigation into this attack and our inquiries are ongoing.”

The investigation targets arson attacks and other incidents aimed at Jewish, Israeli, and Iranian sites in recent weeks, underlining the commitment to not tolerate such hateful actions.

Community safety and involvement

Counter-terrorism officers are collaborating with Metropolitan Police colleagues to provide security advice to organizations, venues, and businesses affected by recent incidents.

“If you have concerns about someone behaving suspiciously, please report it to us. Your information could help us save lives,” Commander Flanagan urged the public, highlighting the importance of community vigilance.

Residents and community members are encouraged to remain alert and report any suspicious activities that could contribute to safeguarding lives and communities.
