Police have launched an investigation after a pedestrian was killed in a collision involving two vehicles on the A19 southbound in Sunderland on Saturday evening, 20th December.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 10.10pm, below the overpass for the A183.

It is reported that a man in his 60s was walking along the southbound carriageway when he was struck first by a white Toyota Prius and then a blue Volkswagen Sharan. Tragically, he died at the scene.

The drivers of both vehicles stopped and are assisting police with their enquiries.

The victim’s next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

Road closures remain in place

Northumbria Police’s Roads Policing Unit has appealed for witnesses to the collision, especially anyone who may have dashcam or CCTV footage of the incident or the moments leading up to it.

Sergeant Steve Chappell, who is leading the investigation, extended condolences to the man’s family, saying: “This is a tragic incident in which a man has sadly lost his life, and our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time.

“We will continue to support them in any way we can.

“Our investigation will look to establish the circumstances around the collision, and we are appealing for anyone else who was in the area at the time and saw what happened to come forward.

“Any information – no matter how insignificant it may seem – could prove valuable to our enquiries.”

A spokesperson from the North East Ambulance Service confirmed their involvement: "We received multiple calls to 999 from 10.11pm onwards on 20th December to reports of an incident involving two vehicles and a pedestrian at the junction of the A19 and A183 in Sunderland. We sent two emergency ambulance crews, a doctor and a clinical team leader. Police also attended the scene."

As part of the investigation, parts of the A19 have been closed, including:

The northbound carriageway between the junctions for the A690 and the A183

The southbound carriageway between the junctions for the A1231 and the A690

Additionally, pedestrian access along the westbound stretch of the roundabout is also closed.

Police have advised motorists to avoid the area and use alternative routes as the closures are expected to remain in place for some time.

Anyone with information or footage is asked to contact Northumbria Police directly via social media, live chat, or report forms on their website. Alternatively, those unable to use these methods can call 101 and quote reference number NP 20251220-1150.
