A police officer has been punched in the throat while responding to a car crash in Dudley early this morning (Thu 1 Jan).
West Midlands Police were called to reports of a Ford Ranger crashing into a wall on Robert Street, Lower Gornal, just before 5.30am today.
When officers arrived, they saw a man walking away from the scene. As a police officer tried to stop the man from getting into a nearby Range Rover, she was attacked and punched in the throat.
The car then drove away, but West Midlands Police worked quickly, utilising traffic and drones units. Two suspects were located at Swindon in South Staffordshire at around 7.30am.
A man, aged 46, was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving and assaulting an emergency worker. A woman, aged 48, was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.
West Midlands Police said a car believed to be involved in the incident was recovered, and the police officer thankfully did not sustain serious injuries.
Both suspects remain in custody for questioning as investigations continue.
