Protestors gathered at Lifford Lane from around 6am this morning (9th May) to show their backing for the all-out bin strike, now entering its eighth week.

We're told coaches have been organised across the country, including from Oxfordshire, Bristol, Leeds and London, with the aim of joining today's ‘Megapicket’ and hearing speeches from across the local and national trade union movement.

Strike Map, a worker-powered and funded digital map of industrial action across Great Britain and Ireland, has been coordinating the ‘Megapicket’ alongside We Demand Change and Peace and Justice Project to show support for the Birmingham Bin Strikers.

Its co-founder Henry Fowler said: “In just one day we raised £1,000 for the Brum Bin Strikers from selling pin badges. After selling another 1,000 we visited the picket line a few weeks ago.

"It was clear that although money is essential, the support of our movement to defy these cuts from council, backed up by this Government, is critical. The Brum Bin Strikers need to know we are all behind them, and that is why we have organised the Megapicket.”

Fresh talks between the Unite union, representing striking bin teams, and Birmingham City Council ended without resolution at conciliation service Acas last week.

In a statement issued at the end of February, Birmingham City Council insisted it had made a "fair and reasonable offer" to Unite the Union.
