Small "giant" anteater greets the world at Blackpool zoo
Keepers say they're delighted
Proud parents, Andina and Eskil, both aged 15, have welcomed their fourth baby on 2nd March, giving visitors the chance to see the young giant anteater hitching a ride on its mother's back at the zoo.
This newest addition joins the couple's growing family, which includes their two-year-old daughter, Myrtle.
Two of their older offspring have been relocated to other zoos in Europe over recent years.
Despite the species being known as the giant anteater, the new pup is only about 50cm long, making it a petite addition.
So far, keepers have not determined its gender, as they are allowing the mother to rear the pup naturally.
Every birth is really important for their conservation.
Characterised by striking black and white diagonal stripes, dense shaggy hair, large snouts, and impressive bushy tails, giant anteaters are a remarkable sight.
Jason Keller, Senior Keeper, emphasised the importance of the birth, stating: "Giant anteaters are such a unique species and every birth is really important for their conservation."
"They are classified as vulnerable to extinction in the wild and, with populations in continued decline, they are considered the most threatened mammal in Central America."
Although the pup is capable of walking independently, it prefers riding on its mother's back for now—a behaviour typical for anteater offspring during their first six to 12 months of life.
"With such distinctive markings, it is a little hard to spot the baby at first as it blends in with mum, but it is worth a closer look, as once you catch a glimpse of that tiny snout, you won’t be able to take your eyes off it!" Keller added.
Originating from environments like swamps, grasslands, and humid forests between Southern Belize and northern Argentina, giant anteaters are the last species to have evolved on South America when it was still an isolated continent.
